The Bear

8+
Jean-Jacques Annaud, France, 1988
94 min, Dutch spoken

A unique film set in the wilderness, seen from the view of Youk the little bear who loses his mother and finds a new father in Bart, a tipsy grumpy bear. With a group of hunters close on his heels, Bart teaches his pupil the tricks of the trade: fishing, standing upright, pushing over trees and similar essential skills. Four years of training (for instance to keep Youk from Bart's jaws) and a lot of 'marshmallows, apples, salmon and chicken legs' (According to reports, a bear only performs in exchange for food.) resulted in the biggest French box-office success of 1988. The film was mostly shot in Italy (Dolomites) and Austria (Tirol). The majestic final scene was shot in Canada (MacKenzie Delta).
