U
9
Grégoire Solotareff & Serge Elissalde, France, 2006
Mona is a princess who no little girl would wish to be. One day, the sound of her crying summons U, a unicorn that says it is there to protect and comfort her whenever needed. U becomes Mona’s companion, both her big and little sister, confidant and inseparable friend. Mona grows up and turns into a very beautiful princess, whilst the Wévés, a group of peaceful and charming musicians move into the neighbouring forest. One of them, Kulka, is about to change everything.
Although the film has a surrealist side and an adult tone, ‘U’ is an earthy film. Young viewers will appreciate the story which is close to their world. The film is animated in an unusual (paintbrushes keep up the author’s characteristic style) but very nice way!
