2008 / workshops

At both festival locations we will organize a large number of workshops suitable for different age groups. Moreover, adults are even admitted to some sessions. We will cooperate with the best art education organizations of Belgium.

Workshops

Stage Fright
For children and (grand) parents
If someone takes a picture of you, you will always assume a pose. Sometimes you try to come across as natural as possible, sometimes you play a part. Who do you become in front of the camera and what story can you think of that explains what is happening in the photograph? And what story does your mum, dad, grandmother or grandfather tell?

Film at the MuHKA
Ages 5-7
Open your eyes and ears for a few hours but not at the film theatre this time. We take you on a visit to the MuHKA where you get the opportunity to work creatively with the process of listening and watching. Together with a guide you get the opportunity to discover the secrets of film, images and the stories they tell. Suitable for every child who likes a challenge.

Snapshots
Ages 5-12
‘Click’ becomes ‘Snap’. We do not stick pictures on paper any more but go completely digital! By means of little tasks and different subjects we learn how to frame and take photographs. We immediately show you the result, so that you can easily improve your skills! Nobody escapes our quick shots which become much more than just ordinary pictures.

Virtual Space
Ages 6-9 and ages 9-12
In small groups, we create a short science fiction story. We think up a fictitious space and design our own scenery. By means of Hollywood-effects, blue- and greenkey, it is possible to walk through our own drawing.

Reporter on the Red Carpet
Ages 6-16
You are a film nut and you have a way with words…this makes you the perfect reporter! Armed with cameras, microphones and some guts we discover what is going on behind the scenes and on the frontlines of the festival. We will shoot our own coverage in Antwerp and Bruges and edit our footage in order to create a dazzling report. Afterwards, your reports will be screened and will be put on YouTube.

Create your own animated film
Ages 8-10
During spring half-term the ‘Kunstwerkstation’ arrives at the Biekorf. Their programme includes the workshop ‘Create your own animated film’. Invent a story and make a storyboard. Create your own clay character and bring it to life by means of a camera! Afterwards, you receive a DVD with your film!

Fly along
Ages 8-10
Do you know ‘Vlieg’(Fly)? This little creature informs you about cultural events and activities for children in Flanders. Teach Vlieg how to spread its wings and create a film starring Vlieg and our festival animal.
Many thanks to Vlieg!

Head of Frankenstein
Ages 8-12
Boom…and aaaaaargh! A man falls out of a window and his face is full of scratches, bumps and cuts. In this workshop, we are the stunt men. By means of make-up and face powder we can create bloody cuts, swollen burns, thousands of wrinkles and zombie-like faces in a jiffy. We will transform your beautiful face into a horror face within 2 hours!

FILM-RELATED WORKSHOPS

Willy
Workshop linked to Willy and the Wild Rabbit
Ages 4-5 and mum or dad
Who lives on a farm? Do you know all those animals? What sounds do they make? By means of a voice and musical instruments we create our own soundtrack. We jump around in front of the camera in a scenery made of pictures, just like Willy and his friends. By means of simple animation techniques we make huge chessmen dance and let pigs fly… Children get into action, mum and dad sit at the controls!

Desmond
Workshop linked to Desmond and the Swamp Monster
Ages 5-7
Mrs. Crocodile, Desmond the pig, Willy the wolf? Can you remember every character in the film? By means of sounds and all kinds of funny accessories we will discover the different characters and story lines. We will experiment in front of the camera as well as with the camera. We will discover the basic principles of animation. We will let apple muffins vanish and bring plasticine to life.

Recycled (film) music
Workshops linked to animal films at the EcoHuis
Ages 5-12
After the screening of the animal films at the EcoHuis, you can also take part in a special workshop including an environmental message. Under professional guidance, you get the opportunity to create musical instruments from recycled materials and learn how to play them.

Secrets
Workshop linked to Max Minsky
Ages 8-12
We invite you to stay in a world of caves and secrets for two days. Together we will watch the film Max Minsky and with the assistance of two guides we try to solve the mysteries of the film’s images and sounds. The result of your imagination can be viewed and heard on the festival website. Excitement and adventure guaranteed!

Cinema Bruges
Walk Organized by the Cultural Inheritance Department of Bruges (Erfgoedcel Brugge)
Exclusively for children, age 8+
Two real actresses will guide you through the city past former, forgotten film locations and their history. They will tell you about their lives and about films. And it sometimes happens that they confuse reality and fiction… After the walk you are welcome to enjoy the film Pietje Bell.

Scream
Workshop linked to the film The Substitute
Ages 9-12.
It is a bleak winter night. The doorbell rings. You open the door…but nobody is there. You walk into the garden but the door closes with a bang. Or: you are alone at home, you see a shape in the garden, you want to call a friend but the telephone is not working! Make up your own horror story and scream the place down!
